Start with the final placement
Decide where the image will appear: profile, gallery, phone screen, desktop banner, or print. A later crop can remove hands, hair, props, or environmental clues. Creating for the final frame preserves the visual information that gives the image meaning.
Check the dimensions exposed by the selected model. Supported sizes can differ, and the generator remains the source for current options and token cost. Choose the nearest supported ratio rather than assuming any width and height will work.
Use square for compact balance
A square canvas suits head-and-shoulders portraits, waist-up characters, paired objects, and centered compositions. It gives the subject equal horizontal and vertical pressure, which can make a single figure easy to place.
A square becomes cramped when a full standing pose, long prop, or wide environment needs room. If the model crops limbs, decide whether the scene should move to portrait or whether the prompt should request a tighter shot.
Use portrait for vertical character work
Portrait ratios suit full-body characters, fashion-like poses, tall interiors, and mobile-first artwork. State the crop and request visible feet or hands when those details matter. Leave space around the silhouette for motion and accessories.
A tall canvas can tempt the model to fill empty space with extra objects or elongated anatomy. Give the background a simple vertical structure, such as a doorway, window, or light column, and inspect body proportions after generation.
Use landscape for place and interaction
Landscape ratios support environments, reclining poses, multiple separated subjects, and scenes where location carries part of the story. Describe where the main subject sits within the frame so the model does not place every element in the center.
A wide canvas increases the number of regions the model must resolve. Keep the scene hierarchy clear: main subject, supporting object, background. Remove details that compete with the focal point.
Pair ratio with camera language
Use camera terms that fit the canvas. A portrait full-body shot and a landscape establishing shot create coherent pairs. A close-up can work in any ratio, but the empty space and subject placement should serve a purpose.
Name one composition rule, such as centered, left third, low-angle, or overhead. Multiple framing commands can compete. Keep the prompt readable enough that you can trace a bad crop to one instruction.
Test framing before adding expensive options
Generate a baseline at the intended ratio before enabling added processing. Confirm the subject fits and the major shapes work. Higher-detail settings cannot recover a composition that cuts off the wrong region.
If the frame fails, change ratio or camera wording while the model and prompt stay fixed. Save the successful baseline, then add references or compatible processing. This order reduces the number of costly variables in each request.
Choose the canvas from the final placement
Start with where the image will appear. A phone wallpaper, profile portrait, desktop banner, comic panel, and square gallery tile reserve different space for the subject. Record the required ratio and any safe area for interface controls, text, or cropping. Generating for the final shape is more reliable than forcing a finished composition into it later.
If several placements matter, generate a master composition with enough surrounding space and then test crops. Do not assume a wide banner can be cut from a tight vertical portrait. Important hands, props, and background cues should remain inside the safest central area unless the layout deliberately places them elsewhere.
Match subject count to horizontal space
Portrait ratios naturally support one standing subject, a close character study, or a vertical pose. Wide ratios provide room for two separated characters, a reclining silhouette, or an environment that carries story information. Square ratios work for centered portraits and compact compositions but can pressure full-body poses when the prompt also requests scenery.
Aspect ratio does not guarantee composition. State the crop and placement in the prompt, then inspect whether every subject receives readable space. If the model crowds two characters together, simplify the background, widen the canvas, or create separate character studies before attempting the combined scene.
Test framing at the actual display size
Open the export at the size and crop used by the destination. A face that reads on a large monitor may become too small in a card. Fine linework may disappear in a thumbnail. A dramatic edge crop may be cut again by responsive CSS. Check desktop and mobile containers before settling on the master ratio.
Keep a record of the original dimensions and every derivative crop. Avoid repeated resizing from an already compressed copy. When sharing adult artwork, use the destination platform controls and content labels, confirm the rules permit the image, and keep non-explicit previews separate where a safer thumbnail is appropriate.
Use negative space deliberately
Empty space can hold interface text, establish scale, separate characters, or make a pose readable. State where the subject sits and where space should remain. Without that instruction, the model may fill a wide canvas with extra objects or enlarge the subject until the requested environment disappears.
Check that the negative space survives responsive crops. Place essential content away from edges that a platform may trim. When text will be added later, create it outside the generator and reserve a clean area rather than asking the image model to render important readable copy.
Do not upscale a composition problem
More pixels can improve export flexibility, but they do not repair a cramped crop, unclear silhouette, or misplaced subject. Solve the camera and ratio at a practical test size first. After the composition works, generate or process the permitted final at the dimensions supported by the model and destination.
Inspect whether the aspect ratio changes token cost or available model options before a large run. Save one approved composition as a reference for later variants. This keeps a series aligned even when lighting, clothing, or background details change.
